Ever since the times of Hattrick, Utopia and Neopets, browser games have greatly evolved. No longer are we facing crippled graphics or short, boring gameplay, but today we have a multitude of games, each with its own personality and characteristics, and it is not difficult to get lost in the world of browser based games. They’re useful if you don’t particularly like installing games, or maybe you just want to play something during your free time in the office, without your boss noticing you’ve installed a game on your computer. You’re supposed to be working on it anyways, right? So, in no particular order, here are five games you might find have more to offer than you would ever think possible from a browser game.
Before we continue to the list of top 5 best browser games of the decade, it is only fair to mention one honorary mention that is a relatively new game. Agar.io is the game that took over the world in just a few months. It is for sure the best browser game of the 2015 and just because it is so new, it didn’t make our list, but it doesn’t mean it is any less fun and entertaining. Agar io is a game played by millions of players every day and of course, in all competitiveness, there rose some hacks and javascript bots that play for the user and reach the leaderboard in a short time. We don’t recommend using these, but if you are a hack kind of person, you can get the best hack for Agario here.
1. Adventure Quest Worlds
Adventure Quest Worlds, also sometimes shortened as AQ Worlds, or AQW, is a 2008 browser based MMORPG game. Unlike most browser MMOs, it is completely developed in Adobe Flash. It currently has around 30 million accounts registered for play. After creating an account and logging in, the player selects a class, and according to his choice, he is given a starting weapon. Each class is different and has different abilities and skills. In order to develop your character, you can fight enemies or/and complete quests. The character starts at Rank 1 and goes on as the player progresses through the game. The goal of the game is to move on to higher ranks, defeat the 13 Lords of Chaos (bosses of a kind), and as a final quest, fight and defeat Drakath, the Champion of Chaos.
2. Call of Thrones
Call of Thrones is another MMORPG which is nothing like Agario and it was released in 2011 by YeepGames. It is free to play and available in almost any browser you can think of. The game is full of intense action, allowing the player to progress and explore his destiny. In the meantime, territory conquest and new powers are what we should focus on. In order to win wars for your kingdom, you must direct your hero through a number of battles, at the same time unlocking different skills which help advance through the game. CoT also features several systems, for example the title system which gives you different legendary weapons based on your title, which you get when you finish a title promotion quest, or the quest system which offers a couple types of quests, namely daily, main and sideline quests.
3. Arcane Legends
Arcane Legends is a cross platform hack and slash multiplayer game. It was developed by Spacetime Studios and released in 2012. In the game, which you can play on your browser or mobile device, you build a character and guide him through an immersive fantasy world, completing quests together with other players from all around the world. Those quests will walk you through dungeons, forests and castles, as you defend the kingdom of Arlor.
The character creation offers you three classes with different specifications. The game has thousands of items which you can use to customize your character. Worth mentioning is the ability to grow or collect your own pets which may help you as you attempt to complete your quests.
4. Battlestar Galactica Online
Adding to the list of MMOs is Battlestar Galactica Online, developed and published by Bigpoint, which released the game in an open beta in 2011. It was created and built in Unity’s engine. The game puts you in the position of a pilot in the Battlestar Galactica universe. After you sign up for the game, you make a choice to play as either Cylon or Colonial (humans). That choice cannot be altered later during the game, so be careful.
After selecting your side, you are presented with a short tutorial in which you see the plot of the game, and when you finish it, you are thrown into ‘Battlespace’, which is the universe where you continue to play. You have four main types of ships, you make your choice and enter in the universe, awaited by thousands of players worldwide.
5. Drakensang Online
We will conclude our list with Drakensang Online, which is a freemium MMORPG, first released as a beta in 2011, only to be fully released in 2012, by Bigpoint. According to the developers, currently there are around 35 million accounts. At the beginning of the game, the player gets to choose between four character classes, and you can create no more than four characters per account on a server.
The game’s world, Duria, is available for exploration, and you can choose between quests, dungeon exploration or plain, simple monster killing. When leveling up, the game offers an in-game currency known as Andermant, which you can receive by completing missions or killing enemies, but you can also purchase with real money, similar to many online games. The currency is not obligatory in order to advance in the game.
